The University of Michigan has appointed the Hellenic American Union as its official representative in Greece for the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English since 1957. Since then, the Hellenic American Union has been conducting these tests in Greece as well as in many other countries.

The Proficiency certificate is an official certificate of English proficiency at level C2, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). ECPE is officially recognized by the Greek State (Supreme Personnel Selection Board) and by the private sector as a certificate of English language proficiency at level C2. It is also recognised in various countries and can be used for academic and professional purposes. For more information on the validity of ECPE for academic purposes, its holders are recommended to contact the academic institutions to which they are to submit it.
